I was asked the question "When are you the most creative?" and my answer was "When I am brave". And when you are depressed, courage is a feeling you just cannot access. So this painting was inspired by thoughts of the Lion in the Wizard of Oz who did not feel brave but had to behave that way. I thought that if there is a Lioness that is not brave in the traditional way but could grow a beard, wear Mascara and Lipstick, and put make-up on in very bright colours and behave as if she were brave - this is where the Woke Lioness was born. A brave female lioness with a mane and lots of imagination. A Drag Queen Lioness.
